Princess Mononoke

A review

Sarah Rasher sent us a little review of Claires voice role in “Princess Mononoke”:

Claire has a starring voice role in the upcoming Miramax release of the film “Princess Mononoke.” The movie is the highest-grossing Japanese film ever, directed by the wonderful and brilliant Hayao Miyazaki (yeah, as an anime fan and a Claire fan, Im a little biased here, but hes well-known in Japan as one of their most accomplished filmmakers); its an adult-oriented animated movie centering around a young man (voiced by Billy Crudup) who is cursed by a forest-god-turned-demon and sets off to orchestrate harmony between the forest and the human civilization that is encroaching upon it. Claire plays the title character, a girl raised by wolf-gods who is a sort of link between the animal world and the human world. I had the opportunity to see an advance screening of the film (which will be coming out in the next couple of months) and it is fantastic! This American version of the film features a lot of well-known actors supplying voices (Minnie Driver, Billy Bob Thornton, and Gillian Anderson also among them), and I was worried that the dialogue would be watered down in comparison to the original Japanese version. Not so– the English translation, apart from a few lines and visual details added to clarify things for an American audience, is very faithful to the original. All of the voice performances are very strong– my brain inserted an Angela-Chase-ism only once. All in all, a great movie and a great opportunity for Claire trainspotters.

Thanks Sarah !
“Princess Mononoke” will open on October 29th 1999.
