The Washington Post published on Sunday 30th of July 2000 an article about the creator of “My So-Called Life”, Winnie Holzman.

Winnie Holzman knows teenspeak.

“Not many people know of Holzman. Anonymity is common for television writers. But a previous creation of hers, the short-lived drama “My So-Called Life,” has led to a cult following. That show was cancelled in 1995 after just 19 episodes because ABC executives, on a day that shall live in infamy, put it up against a new NBC show called “Friends.”

One Savannah Dooley [Winnie Holzmans daughter] line was used in “MSCL” when a preteen character asks if she can wear makeup on a family night out. She is told no. Her next question: “Well, can I wear it in the driveway?”

There is a key Holzman insight about teen speak. “When you are 14 or 15, you dont feel like you are young,” she said. “You feel like you are old now, grown-up. It is easy for adults to forget that and write down to kids. But I remember that age.”

[...] “It troubles me,” she said, “that people in our community are more comfortable with the image of a 15-year-old girl stripped and stabbed and destroyed than they are with one fully dressed and alive and speaking her own mind.”

But she rejects any notion that she is down on television. With “Once and Again” safely renewed, there will be more adventures of Grace Manning and her family ahead.

“I am energized and excited to be working in a medium I feel passionately about,” she said. “I love what I do.”

“30 seconds to Mars”

Jared Leto just signed a record deal with Immortal Records. His band “30 seconds to Mars” is expected to produce a single in the next months.

Jared Leto and his brother Shannon Leto (who played “Shane” in “My So-Called Life”) founded the band when they were teenagers.

Some episodes are still missing

It looks like the reruns of “My So-Called Life” have finally been axed by Fox Family Channel (BTW: the channel picked up “Freaks and Geeks” for reruns last week)

Asked for the whereabout of MSCL, FFC replies: “Unfortunately, the current Fox Family Channel programming schedule does not include the program you requested, but we will forward your inquiry to the appropriate department. In the meantime, feel free to continue checking in with us for its possible return.”

Duh.

Anyway, well keep you updated.

Shooting begins in September

The AP story:

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – “Gladiator star Russell Crowe, who won acclaim for “L.A. Confidential and an Oscar nomination for “The Insider is set to start filming a movie directed by Jodie Foster in central Florida in September.

Crowe, 36, will co-star with Claire Danes in “Flora Plum, set in a circus during the Depression. Crowe will play a circus freak who takes a starving young woman, played by Danes, under his wing. The movie is budgeted for less than $30 million.

Danes was the star of TVs “My So Called Life and such films as “The Rainmaker and “Romeo + Juliet. She worked previously with Foster on “Home for the Holidays, Fosters second effort as a director.

Tabloid reports have linked Crowe and actress Meg Ryan since her recent split from husband Dennis Quaid.
