Terrible ratings for “quarterlife”, NBC dropping the show?

Blogged in Devon Gummersall by admin Thursday February 28, 2008

The first episode of “quarterlife” only drew 3.1 million viewers to NBC. It marked the network’s worst time-period performance in the 10 p.m. hour in at least 17 years, averaging a 1.3 rating/4 share among adults 18 to 49, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It’s very likely that NBC will drop the show from its schedule before the second episode airs, but there’s hope it will end up on cable somewhere.

Marshall Herskovitz was quoted saying that “[quarterlife] never should have been a network show. It’s too specific.” It didn’t work on network TV because of the “intimate storylines and tight camera angles”.

“From the first three minutes,” he said, “I knew it wasn’t right.”

Interview with Josh and Devon Gummersall

The Durango Herald has printed an article about the arts-loving Gummersall family.

[...]
The Gummersall brothers both feel that their family bond keeps them grounded in the surreal world of Hollywood.

Their father, C. Gregory Gummersall, is a Durango painter and sculptor. Their stepmother, Jenny, is a fine-art photographer and painter, and Tyller, their younger brother, is a local musician. That art-saturated background stands them in good stead in the entertainment industry.

The rumors were true: The broadcast network NBC has picked up the new Bedford Falls production “quarterlife” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The network will premiere the show as an hour-long drama series midseason after it concludes its run on the Internet early in 2008 and will also stream it on nbc.com.

While NBC will become a distribution partner for online, DVD and foreign markets, Herskovitz and Zwick will still retain full ownership and creative control of the series.

Devon Gummersall writes for “Quarterlife”

Devon Gummersall has reunited with Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz: He’s writing episodes for the new webseries “Quarterlife“.

From the National Ledger:

ON THE ‘NET: “State of Mind” regular Devon Gummersall reports he’s been juggling shooting of his Lifetime series with “Quarterlife,” the new upcoming Internet series from Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz. But he won’t be on camera for the latter project. “I’m working as a writer,” says Gummersall, who directed and wrote the indie film “Robbing ‘Hef.” “Quarterlife” follows a group of “25-year-olds in that awkward stage between college and adult life when you’re just out of college and thrust into the real world and have to figure out who you are. It’ll start airing in the fall in 10-minute webisodes.” He adds, “It’s going to be a first-class project, shot pretty much in the typical sophisticated Zwick/Herskovitz way, with high production values the same as if it was for TV or a movie, but it’ll air on the Internet. It’s exciting to explore the possibilities of the Internet because a lot of it is still uncharted territory.”

The actor, who plays wet-behind-the-ears attorney Barry White on “State of Mind,” says the troupe is more than halfway through its order of eight episodes.
